HAZARDOUS WASTE
MANAGEMENT AND TRAFFIC
International Strategy
Develop international strategy for environmentally sound
management of hazardous wastes.
PROGRAMME AREAS (4 Nos)
- Prevent and Minimize Hazardous wastes
- Processing wastes into useful recycled materials
- Employ cleaner production methods
- Enhance knowledge and information on economics of
prevention and management of hazardous wastes.
- Reduce generation of hazardous wastes to feasible
extent
Promote and Strengthen Institutional capacities in hazardous Waste
management
- Adopt appropriate Coordinating, Legislative and Regulatory
measures
- Public Awareness Campaigns
- Information programs at the national level
Improve knowledge regarding the effects of
hazardous wastes on human health and the environment.
Promote and Strengthen International Cooperation in the Management
of trans-boundary movements of hazardous wastes
- Harmonizing Criteria for identification of
hazardous wastes which are dangerous to the environment
- Building monitoring capacities
- Adopt policies for implementation of a ban or
prohibition of export of hazardous wastes to countries that have
banned their import.
Illegal international traffic in hazardous wastes
- Strengthen International capacities to detect and halt any
illegal attempt to introduce hazardous wastes into any country.
- Assistance to countries that suffer the consequences of illegal
traffic, particularly developing countries, within the framework of
the Basel convention.
