FEDEN MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY –

JUNE 5, 2003

The Foundation for Environmental Development and Education in Nigeria (FEDEN), a non-governmental organization that promotes environmental awareness and sustainable development in Nigeria marks this year’s World Environment Day (WED) with a symposium, on June 5, 2003 at the Auditorium of Chic Afrique House, 3, Thorburn Avenue, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

The Theme of the Symposium is Harnessing Nigeria’s Water Resources Towards Water Security:  Sessions from the Mexico Experience” which is in line with the global theme for this years World Environment Day – “Water: Two Billion are dying for it.”

The symposium is part of FEDEN’s environmental awareness and education activities and a fulfillment of the United Nation’s General Assembly’s Resolution 2997 of 15th December 1992 which encourages Governments and Organizations Worldwide to undertake annually on that day activities reaffirming their commitment to the preservation and enhancement of the environment for present and future generations.

The symposium, which starts at 11.00a.m will be attended by Members of the Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) Programme hosted in Nigeria by FEDEN, a global network of professionals and non-governmental organizations committed to sustainable development.  Members of the public are also welcome.

The panelist are from groups of Nigerian professionals from various sectors and discipline who recently under test study visits to Mexico, where they had the opportunity to observe and explore the merits and challenges of managing threatened water resources, the impacts on sustainability and efforts being made to mitigate negative impacts and working towards Water Security.  They joined other LEAD Associates from Brazil, China, India, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Southern Africa, Senegal, Morocco, as part of the International training component of the LEAD Capacity Building Programme.

The symposium is therefore an opportunity for them to share there experiences and draw attention to lessons for Nigeria.
